Abstract

We study the electronic transport of a quantum wire partly irradiatedunder an external terahertz (THz) electromagnetic field. Using thefree-electron model and scattering matrix approach we demonstrate thatalthough the electrons in a ballistic quantum wire only suffer fromlateral collision with photons, the reflection of electrons also takesplace. More interestingly there is a sharp step-structure in thetransmission probability as the total energy of electron increases to athreshold value when the frequency of electromagnetic field is resonantwith the separation of lateral levels of the wire. The interferencestructure of transmission for the system apparently appears when thefield only irradiates the middle part of the wire.
