Abstract

The Si(100)2×1-H monohydride and the clean Si(100)2×1 surface have been studied with angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. On the 2×1-H surface, two strong, hydrogen induced surface states/resonances are observed. Their energy positions at J in the surface Brillouin zone are 4.8 and 5.6 eV below the Fermi level ( E F ), in good agreement with a recent band structure calculation. We have also observed a surface state, at 1.8 eV below E F at J, that is visible on both the monohydride and the clean surface. It is suggested that this surface state is related to the dimer bond.
