Abstract

The near-ultraviolet absorption spectra of some substituted benzenes have been measured in n-pentane solution and in the vapor state. The shifts in frequency due to the n-pentane solvent are discussed in terms of the dispersion theory for electronic spectral shifts for weak transitions. Spectral shifts of the intense, high-energy transitions in benzene and in some hexasubstituted benzenes are considered briefly.
