Abstract

The first detailed study of the electronic spectrum of 1,8-naphthyridine is reported. Absorption and emission spectra were recorded of 1,8-naphthyridine in solution, stretched polyethylene film, and various mixed-crystal systems. The π* ← π band systems in the absorption spectrum correspond to perturbed naphthalene transitions. The lowest-energy π* ← n band system is consistent with the predictions of simple through-bond coupling calculations, and a possible second π * ← n system is reported. The phosphorescence spectrum is caused by a 3(π*, π) state and yields useful vibrational information. The mixed-crystal spectra provide evidence of significant guest—host interactions, including a substantial interaction between intramolecular vibrations and phonon modes.
