Abstract

For high energy experiments requiring a long particle spill at constant energy at the Brookhaven Alternating Gradient Synchrotron, the ripple of the magnet power supply is several times 1000 V. This voltage ripple produces a ripple in the magnetic field which, in turn, causes a radial motion in the orbit of accelerated particles. In this paper we describe the design and performance of the apparatus which reduces the total ripple of the magnet voltage to less than 5% of the unfiltered value. It is a closed loop system with a carefully controlled transfer function. A large power tube, used as a direct coupled regulator, is driven from an rf link by low level circuits at ground potential.
