Abstract

The low-lying electronic energy levels of the divalent cobalt ion in doped isomorphic single crystals of CdCl 2, CdBr 2 and MnCl 2 have been measured at low temperatures by means of the Raman effect. The observed energies, which are markedly concentration dependent, are assigned to transitions within the 4F ground-state manifold of Co 2+ with the aid of crystal-field theory.
