Abstract

The effect of Mn impurities on the electrical resistivity, the thermoelectric power and the magnetic susceptibility of liquid Al has been studied. The experimental results are analysed in terms of the Friedel-Anderson model of localized d states, including both the magnetic and the non-magnetic description. The magnetically split d levels are characterized by a width of 1.3 eV, an intra-atomic interaction energy of U+4J approximately=6.6 eV and a temperature-dependent spin number of 0.74<or=S<or=0.84 which is assumed to be responsible for the unusual magnetic behaviour.
