Abstract

This study examined the extent to which implementation of meaningful use of electronic health records (EHRs) by organizations treating patients for treatment substance use disorders (SUDs) is related to the level of the organization’s entrepreneurial strategic orientation. In two studies of separate samples each containing over 300 treatment organizations, we found that entrepreneurial strategic orientation accounted for over two-thirds of the variance in meaningful use of EHRs after controlling for the effects of a group of alternative organizational variables. While the relationship of specific components of entrepreneurial strategic orientation with meaningful HER use differed between studies, organizational autonomy and innovativeness were significantly related to implementation of EHRs in both studies. From a policy and practice perspective, the results strongly indicate that providing support that develops higher levels of entrepreneurial strategic orientation within SUDs treatment centers will increase their level of meaningful use of EHRs.
