Abstract

The use of intrapartum electronic fetal monitoring is recommended for women with high-risk pregnancies. Electronic fetal monitoring has evolved since the early 17th century, now providing sophisticated technology. In terms of continuous monitoring, this can be performed using an external transducer or an internal fetal scalp electrode and the method of choice is based on both clinical need and the woman's preference. There has been anecdotal evidence of concerns regarding cross infection with the use of the fetal scalp electrode, therefore a new product is being launched to minimize this risk.
