Abstract

The emission spectrum of the A 1Σ + u-X 1Σ + g band of Na 2 following Ar-ion laser excitation of the B 1Π u state has been recorded as a function of excitation frequency and cell temperature. The band profile is shown to be inconsistent with a thermalised excited state. The spectrum is interpreted as being the result of a collisionally assisted curve crossing to the metastable (2) 1Σ + g state, and subsequent infrared radiative decay to the A state.
