Abstract

The high resolution electronic absorption spectra of 3-methyldiazirine and 3-methyl-d3-diazirine are presented. A vibrational analysis is given for the allowed A″(nπ*1)←1A′ electronic system of each molecule, and a 0–0 band is assigned at 29 201 cm−1 for 3-methyldiazirine and at 29 228 cm−1 for 3-methyl-d3-diazirine. Evidence is also presented for a possible second electronic system to the red of the allowed singlet-singlet system of each molecule. The ν4′ symmetric N=N stretching vibration is the most prominent feature in all the electronic systems.
