Abstract

Integral cross sections for electron capture from the ground state Na(3s) and excited states Na(3p) to Li(nlm), n=2, 3, are calculated by the semiclassical impact-parameter method, using a two-centre atomic basis expansion. In the impact energy range 1-50 keV, results are analysed with particular emphasis on the alignment and orientation of initial and final p-states. At intermediate velocities opposite initial alignment effects are found for capture to n=2 and n=3 states, respectively. Orientation effects in state-to-state capture cross sections are predicted from oriented and tilted aligned initial states.
