Abstract

Abstract The role of quinones in photobiological functions and in biochemical electron-transport processes has been well recognized1. The photoreduction of simple 1,4-benzoquinones in solution has been extensively studied and the mechanism can be represented by the following reactions: The intermediate semiquinone radical QH produced by the triplet quinone abstracting a hydrogen atom from the donor solvent RH, has been observed by e.s.r. in CIDEP studies2. In some hydroxylic solvents, it has been demonstrated3–5 the neutral semiquinone radicals convert rapidly to radical anions in alkaline solutions:
