Abstract

A kind of thermally tempered glass grains known as “Prince Rupert's drops” were irradiated with gamma rays and investigated by electron spin resonance (ESR). Using these drops, the irradiation and ESR measurements could be performed without changing the internal stress. It was confirmed that the residual internal stress in Pyrex (Corning 7740) glass affects the formation and thermal stability of boron oxygen hole centers, a kind of radiation-induced paramagnetic center.
