Abstract

E.s.r. spectroscopy and pulse radiolysis with optical detection have been employed to investigate the reactions of some iodine-containing compounds with the hydroxyl radical and with some simple carbon radicals. Competition experiments and direct measurements of the variation of radical concentration with time have afforded absolute rate constants for some of these reactions, including those of iodoacetic acid with ·OH [5 (±1)× 109], ·CH2OH [2·1 (±0·7)× 108], and ·CH2CMe2OH [1·3 (±0·3)× 107 l mol–1 s–1]. These data and possible reaction mechanisms are discussed.
