Abstract

AbstractThe effect of O2, SO2, NH3, H2S, and NO on the ESR of irradiated PTFE were studied. Radicals were produced by (1) irradiation of PTFE in an atmosphere of one of these gases and (2) by the postirradiation reaction of PTFE with this same gas. These radicals were subsequently reacted with each of the remaining four gases, and the resulting spectra were studied. The radical produced in PTFE by the irradiation in vacuum is quenched by NO. In this reaction, the relation between the number of quenched radicals and the pressure of NO was measured, showing that the relation can be expressed by Freundlich's equation for adsorption equilibria. From these data, the bonds formed by the reaction between the gases and the radicals, the classification of the radical and the structure of these radicals were discussed.
