Abstract

Electron donor and acceptor properties of γ-alumina, silica and γ-alumina and silica supported palladium oxide have been studied. It was observed that while γ-alumina had both electron acceptor and donor properties, silica had only electron acceptor characteristics. γ-Alumina supported palladium oxide showed better acceptor properties than donor properties. Silica supported palladium oxide showed only electron acceptor properties. The effects of electron donor and acceptor compounds and different solvents on the radical formed by acetylene over Al 2 O 3 and SiO 2 supported PdO 2 were studied. It is concluded that the structure of Al 2 O 3 PdO 2 C 2 H 2 complex is radically different from that of SiO 2 PdO 2 C 2 H 2 complex. Possible mechanisms for the reactions are discussed.
