Abstract

Although review papers exist pertaining to the use of electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy in polymer science, to detect transient radicals formed during the initiation and propagation steps of polymerization and in polymer degradation1 and in biochemistry2–3, a similar compilation of published papers on applications of ESR in dye chemistry has not been published. This chapter presents such a survey, with emphasis on applications rather than theory or instrumentation. A brief summary of the basic terminology of ESR spectroscony will be given, however.
