Abstract

Magnetic properties of the mixed oxides of sodium and uranium, Na2n−5UOn, (n = 3 and 4), are investigated by both, ESR and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The ∣g∣-factor of U5+ is 3.5 to 4.0 for NaUO3, and the values of ∣g∥∣ and ∣g⟂∣ for Na3UO4, are 0.89 and 0.55, respectively. The magnetic susceptibility of NaUO3, shows an anomalous peak around 32 K, while Na3UO4, is normally paramagnetic. The origin of the observed anomaly for NaUO3, can be attributed to a superexchange interaction between uranium ions through an oxygen ion.
