Abstract

An electron spin echo study of Ti 3+ in Rh/TiO 2 formed by the reaction with deuterium molecules at room temperature reveals that no deuterium exists within 0.6 nm from Ti 3+. The formation of Ti 3+ is interpreted as being due to electron transfer from deuterium atoms to Ti 4+ at the boundary between Rh metal and TiO 2 and subsequent stabilization of deuterium atoms by hydroxyl anions on the surface of TiO 2.
