Abstract

An EPR spectrum characteristic of Fe3+ ions at a C1h site in SrO has been observed in iron-doped samples that had been subjected to oxidation treatments. The spectra have been fitted with an S=5/2 spin Hamiltonian in which the dominant second-order terms have coefficient values ofB20=(661.5+or-0.3)*10-4 cm-1, B21=(-538.2+or-0.4)*10-4 cm-1 and B22=(250.3+or-0.6)*10-4 cm-1. The angular variation of the EPR spectrum was studied with magnetic field rotating in (110)- and (100)-type planes. It was found that the principal axis direction of the D tensor in the zx plane is tilted by only 9 degrees away from the (111) direction towards the (110) direction. Possible models of the centre involving a cation vacancy or oxygen interstitial are discussed.
