Abstract

The general ultrastructural features of Sarcocystis sp. previously reported were confirmed in this study of the parasite in the skeletal muscle of boat-tailed grackles. In addition, the following new features were described. The villus of the cyst wall contained dense bands of longitudinal microtubules and also a scattering of transverse microtubules, and the matrix of the wall consisted of closely packed, beaded fibrils. Micropores were present on the lateral surface of the pellicle of sarcosporidian cells. Rhoptries were seen in cystozoites, and straight or curved ductules of the organelle extended through the conoid. An unidentified body was seen in the midzonal portion of the cystozoite; this body was an elongated, inverted bulbous structure which was open at one end and contained a hollow, central core.
