Abstract

In sections from dark-grown pea seedlings two types of mitochondria were observed: mitochondria with a very dense matrix and mitochondria with a much more transparent matrix. In both types of mitochondria DNA-containing electron-transparent areas were observed. The morphological structure of the DNA complexes varied. The study of DNA released from osmotically disrupted mitochondria revealed mitochondrial fragments associated with DNA fibrils. Mitochondrial lysates and purified preparations of DNA isolated from mitochondria displayed only linear molecules whose average length was 10.1 ± 0.4 μ (SE).
