Abstract

In order to clarlify the nature of albicated plastids in variegated leaves of Liriope, the development of the plastids in both variegated and green tissues was comparatively studied in detail. The fine structure of the proplastids occuring in meristematic cells of variegated part is similar to that of green part. During the course of development, conspicuous structural changes are observed in plastids of both tissues. Prolamellar body of the proplastid in green part shows crystal-lattice-like appearance, and develops into a well-organized lamellar system. In variegated part, however, the arrangement of vesicles in prolamellar body is quite irregular and no typical lamellar system can not be observed. Structural abnormality as observed in albicated plastids seems to be caused primarily by an irregular arrangement of component vesicles within the prolamellaar body.
