Abstract
Stoichiometric PeS has been examined electron optically both before and after various annealing treatments. Annealing causes phase separation to take place either by a spinodal mechanism or by nucloation and growth. The resulting phases differ slightly in their iron content and it is considered that their compositions lie on either side of the stoichiometric composition. Both phases share a common NiAs subcell. The iron-poor phase has a modulated structure based on a 2a,1c suporcell formed by the ordering of vacancies, whereas the iron-rich phase has the √3, 2C low-troilito superstructure.
