Abstract

Singly charged cluster-ion yield ϕ1 of MeV/atom carbon cluster ions, generated using He and Ne gases as a charge-changing gas in tandem accelerator, is analytically formulated by six cross sections on the basis of the rate equation. These cross sections for electron-loss process from a cluster were estimated with use of the time-dependent quantum theory, assuming binary collision treatment and independent electron model. The cross sections in ϕ1 estimated for MeV/atom Cn (n = 2–4) clusters were found to show the sub-linear dependence on the atom number n. The gas-pressure dependences of the ϕ1 values calculated for the 2.5 MeV C2+ and C4+ ions using Ne gas are in good agreement with the experimental data obtained at TIARA.
