Abstract

Positive ions formed by electron impact on CH 3CN have been studied by mass spectrometry. The appearance energies of various electronic states of the observed ions have been determined by deconvolution of the experimental ionization efficiency curves by the energy distribution difference (EDD) method. Plausible reaction schemes to explain each starting point in the ionization efficiency curves have been determined thermochemically by using known Δ H r values of the reactants and products. A total of 49 different ionization processes have been observed and identified. several of which have not been reported previously in the literature.
