Abstract

Using the concept of the generalized oscillator strength and the techniques previously developed, we synthesize a diverse body of experimental data on carbon dioxide into a set of analytical electron impact cross sections. The generalized oscillator strengths of Lassettre and Shiloff (1965) serve as the primary data. We include in our analysis discrete excitation, autoionization, direct ionization, and dissociative ionization. Dissociation is implicitly included in our discrete cross sections, and its possible importance at large energy loss is discussed. The ultimate object of our work is the final set of cross sections represented by workable analytic forms that may be readily applied to dayglow and planetary aeronomy.
