Abstract

We present a first Born formalism for elastic electron-hydrogen atom scattering in the presence of a linearly polarized intense laser when the atom is 'dichotomized' in the Kramers frame and is described by a variationally determined wavefunction. We find that exchange scattering is, in general, negligible, while for direct scattering, the ratio of the laser-modified differential cross section and the field-free Rutherford cross section deviates significantly from previous results where the atom was modelled by a potential. Numerical and analytic results for total cross sections have also been presented. Finally, we discuss the long range effects of the Coulomb tail in the forward direction.
