Abstract

Abstract Electron Stimulated Desorption (ESD) and Photon Stimulated Desorption (PSD, q.v.) are probably the most notable examples of the maxim that one man’s artefact is another man’s technique. Whenever electron, or to a lesser extent, photon, probes are used for surface analysis there is always the worry that the probe itself may be changing the surface composition and/or chemistry during the measurement. In AES the number of recorded examples of electron beam effects is by now considerable. The desorption techniques, however, actually use the probe/surface interaction that is so troublesome elsewhere as a means of characterization in its own right.
