Abstract

A method utilizing Fourier techniques is outlined by which analytical expressions can be found for transition amplitudes and cross sections in a first order impact parameter formulation of the electron excitation induced by protons impinging on hydrogen. The method is applied to two kinds of processes, viz. direct excitation of the hydrogen atom and capture of an electron (into an excited state) by the incoming proton. Calculations are done for transitions from the initial state 1 s to the final states 1 s, 2s, 2p z, 2p x, 3 s, 3p z, 3p x, 3d z, 3d xz, 3d xy (elastic scattering excluded). Also expressions for the polarization of the p-s and d-p transitions are derived.
