Abstract

A multiple scattering approach is applied to evaluate the inelastic electron scattering cross-section for large momentum transfers (i.e. backscattering) from solid systems. The high number of electrons observed in backscattering E.E.L.S. is justified by the predominant contribution of double scattering events in respect to single ones. Furthermore the threshold peak intensity is predicted to be an oscillatory function of momentum transfer. This is a new effect which is related to the local atomic order around the absorbing site.
