Abstract
Mouse liver tissue with a low histochemical activity of acid phosphatase was compared electron microscopically with liver tissue showing a high activity. The location of acid phosphatase in the parenchymal cells between the nucleus and the bile capillaries and in the Kupffer cells agreed well with the location of electron-dense material. A higher activity of acid phosphatase corresponded with a larger quantity of electron dense material. In addition mouse liver tissue was studied after intraperitoneal injection of Dextran. This tissue shows an increased activity of acid phosphatase connected with the formation of vacuoles of stored Dextran in the parenchymal cells between the nucleus and the bile capillaries and in the Kupffer cells. In the parenchymal cells many electron-dense bodies were found between the Dextran vacuoles sometimes forming part of the vacuole wall. In the Kupffer cells this connection was even more evident. These results indicate that in the liver acid phosphatase is attached to the electron-dense material.
