Abstract

The simultaneous ionization and excitation process near threshold in atoms by polarized electron impact has been used to provide information on spin transfer and electron correlation. The effects of electron exchange and the spin - orbit interaction have been measured in the ionization and excitation of the krypton atoms through measuring the Stokes parameters for the decay photons from the ionic states of and . It is found in the break-up of the Wannier complex that many partial waves, in addition to the L = 0 wave, from the two outgoing electrons contribute to the scattering process at the ionization threshold. Further, the alignment and orientation of the excited states show an increasing trend as the total angular momentum of the excited states increase.
