Abstract Electron collisional excitation strengths for transitions between the 10 lowest fine-structure levels (3s2S1/2, 3p(2P01/2), 2P03/2, 3d(2D3/2), 2D5/2, 4s(2S1/2), 4p(2P01/2), 2P03/2, 4d(2D3/2), 2D5/2) for Fe XVI are calculated using the relativistic R-matrix method which takes into account parts of the Briet-Pauli Hamiltonian. Rydberg series of resonances converging to the excited state thresholds are explicitly included in the calculation. Present results of collision strength are compared where possible with available distorted wave calculations. Some differences are noted. The effective collision strengths are determined assuming a Maxwellian distribution of electron energies. These are listed over a wide temperature range (106 - 107K).
