Abstract
The expression for the averaged force acting on an electron in an inhomogeneous magnetic field of a helical wiggler and in a field of an inhomogeneous electromagnetic wave is derived. It is shown, that optical guiding in a free electron laser is always accompanied by the appearance of forces, which tend to focus the electron beam.
