Abstract

Flexoelectric phenomena (i.e., phenomena associated with a linear coupling between the dielectric polarization and strain gradient or between the polarization gradient and strain) in solids are addressed. The simplest example of such phenomena is a linear polarization response to a strain gradient. The article overviews the phenomenological theory, microscopic mechanisms, experimental data, and possible applications of the flexoelectric phenomena.
