Abstract

The fractional slot concentrated winding permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSM) are widely investigated in recent years. The electromagnetic performance of traditional 24-slot/20-pole surface-mounted PM machine (24/20-SPM) and 24-slot/20-pole SPM machine with consequent pole (CP) permanent magnet used for in-wheel motor drives for electric vehicle (EV) applications is quantitatively analyzed and compared by finite element analysis (FEA). The shape of the PMs for the 24/20-SPM machine with (CP) rotor is designed as eccentric shape (24/20-ECP-SPM) and compared with 24/20-CP-SPM machine with tile shape permanent magnet (24/20-CP-SPM). In addition, the electromagnetic performance which include back electromotive forces (Back-EMFs), cogging torque, average torque, torque ripple, the volume of PM, machine loss, efficiency and radial force distribution of the analyzed machines are compared and validated by FEA.
