Abstract

Electromagnetic interference (EMI) with control equipment near Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS), which is caused during closing operation of Gas Circuit Breaker (GCB) in GIS, was investigated using a full-scale 66 kV GIS and a 1300 V thyristor unit. It is found that thyristor can be turned on by EMI from surges induced in earthing system during closing operation of GCB. It is also found that such mal-firing is caused by surges with frequency components over 10 MHz, which is peculiar to GIS system. Furthermore, it is experimentally proved that the mal-firing can be suppressed by eliminating bushing and connecting the tanks of high-voltage equipment directly to or via capacitor to power cable sheath.
