Abstract

The Coulomb and the magnetic energy differences between 3H and 3He are calculated using a Gaussian wave function modified to include the effect of a soft repulsive core of the nuclear forces. The electromagnetic potentials obtained from electron scattering are used. The electromagnetic energy difference E em is found to be 0.63 ± 0.03 MeV, where the error is due to the experimental errors of the rms radii of 3H and 3He. The magnetic interactions are found to be unimportant. Various corrections are estimated and are found to be within the quoted error. The form factor is also calculated and is in fair agreement with experiment. The value of E em thus obtained is definitely smaller than the binding energy difference 0.764 MeV, which indicates that the n-n interaction is stronger than the p-p interaction.
