Abstract

Ultrasonic shear waves have been detected electromagnetically at 15.3 MHz in a single crystal of pure tin between 1.5 and 4.2K in zero magnetic field. The radiation efficiency H(T) decreases rapidly below the superconducting transition temperature. The temperature dependence of H(T) for an electropolished surface is in good agreement with that calculated from the change in the complex conductivity sigma (q, omega ). From the data we obtain a London penetration depth lambda L(0)=253+or-25 AA for an (001) surface.
