Abstract

This paper presents a numerical technique with rigorous mathematical background to evaluate the average EM spatial DOF number in noisy multiple scattering environments. This technique is developed from Piestun and Miller's DOF theory for optical systems, and is believed to be a trustworthy tool to verify other EM spatial DOF theories. The fast multipole method (FMM) is used in field calculation, and the average EM spatial DOF number in two dimensions is evaluated through Monte Carlo simulations
