Abstract

Summary A new method for studying the non-steady state separation factor of hydrogen and deuterium on platinum has been developed with a view to investigating the fast step in the hydrogen evolution reaction. It has been shown that the measurement of the separation factor on platinum as a function of frequency can be interpreted only in terms of a progressive weakening of the platinum-hydrogen bond with increasing coverage. The discharge of H + on D must also be much faster than that of D + on H.
