Abstract
In view of a significant shift from traditional fossil fuel-based power systems to sustainable and renewable energy, the electrochemical energy storage and conversion devices are the most promising for energy applications. Two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials play an essential role in various electrochemical applications for sensors, energy storage, conversion systems, etc. 2D nanomaterials have a unique structure, higher surface area, specific physical properties, and multi-functionalities that have attracted great attention toward diverse electrochemical applications. Besides, 2D nanomaterials have been actively studied as additives or fillers for polymer electrolyte membrane composites, significantly improving functional properties at even extremely lower loading. In particular, the exploration of nano-architecture in 2D nanomaterials has received special attention of late. This chapter gives an in-detail overview of the various modifying methods of 2D materials such as graphene, graphene oxide, MXene, and MoS2 as fillers or additives for polymer electrolyte membranes, their characterization and properties are systematically organized. Furthermore, dispersion methods of 2D materials into membrane, surface enrichment, interface bonding between polymer and 2D nanomaterials are also well-discussed in this chapter.
