Abstract

The effect of a depletion layer formed in an aqueous solution of nonadsorbing water soluble polymers on the electrophoretic mobility of a particle coated with a charged layer (hairly layer model) was theoretically studied. A final equation is given which describes the mobility as a function of the depletion layer parameters. It was shown that depletion led to an increase of the mobility due to the reduced viscosity in the depletion layer. In most cases the effect of the spatial distribution of charges worked in the opposite direction. The depletion layer effect depended on ionic strength.
