Abstract

The precipitates obtained from CuSO4, alkali halides, and NaOH consist chiefly of brochantite Cu4SO4(OH)6. The precipitate obtained in the presence of chloride contains also atacamite. The dispersions of pale green particles at pH > 10 turn brown within several hours. The particles show pH-dependent surface-charging similar to that shown by metal oxides, and their IEP is at pH about 9, and it is independent of nature and concentration of 1-1 electrolyte. The electrokinetic curves in the specimens precipitated in the presence of bromide and iodide at pH < 7 were atypical: at high ionic strengths the positive ζ potentials dropped as the pH decreased.
