Abstract
Eleven patients suffered severe injuries to the head followed immediately by coma. This condition later evolved into stuporous or semicomatose states resembling sleep. At this stage the EEG showed sleep-like patterns with 14 c/sec spindles, vertex sharp waves and fairly typical K-complexes. In all cases the clinical course was favorable. We offer the hypothesis that this electroclinical pattern may reflect a transient and reversible functional state indicative of resolving derangement of function of the midbrain reticular formation.
