Abstract

In large scale fusion magnets wound with cable in conduit conductors, the electrical connections between superconducting cables are critical components for the safe operation of the magnet system. This work presents the results of a numerical study on the electrodynamic losses generated in the twin-box joints of the Poloidal Field (PF) coils of the ITER magnet system during a relevant dynamic plasma scenario. The study was carried out using two numerical models implemented in the THELMA code and in a 3D finite element software; both were previously validated versus experimental data obtained in the SULTAN facility (Swiss Plasma Center, Villigen, Switzerland).
