Abstract

The seed layer consisting of ZnO nanoparticles has long been recognized as the primary option for hydrothermal growth of high-quality ZnO nanowire arrays (ZnO NWAs). Herein, we provide an additional option, i.e., the electrodeposited Zn nano-grains, which can also grow into ZnO nanowires in hydrothermal environment. Remarkably, the nanocrystalline Zn coating can be facilely deposited on various conductive substrates under ambient conditions, while its minimum temperature required for growing ZnO NWAs is only 50 °C. Therefore, it is an ideal alternative to the cost-intensive and energy-consuming ZnO seed layer for industrial-scale production of ZnO NWAs.
