Abstract

The mechanisms for electrode material heating and removal are discussed briefly. Onset conditions are derived as a function of materials properties and pulse parameters for thermal damage at the electrode surface for both arc joule heating and electrode joule heating with and without the skin effect. Material figure of merits are presented which should roughly rank a materials ability to withstand erosion under different pulse conditions.
